Dollar Store Spice Tiers: The Riser Lip That Holds

Dollar Store Spice Tiers: The Riser Lip That Holds

The front lip on each tier is what stops spice jars from sliding forward and tumbling out every time you open the cabinet door.

Thrifty Tuesday is all about proving that a dollar can do real work, and this one fixes the cabinet where spices go to hide. Stacked dollar-store risers fail for one reason: the bare plastic edge has no lip, so the first time you yank a jar from the back row, the whole front row slides out with it. The fix is a cheap strip of adhesive-backed foam or rubber trim along the front edge of each tier, tall enough to catch the bottom corner of a jar. That tiny lip turns a wobbly pile into a staircase where every label is visible and every jar stays put. Total cost is about $8 and it takes 20 minutes.

What You'll Need

  • Three plastic shelf risers or stackable dollar-store trays, about $1 each, sturdy enough to hold a full jar
  • Adhesive-backed rubber or foam weatherstrip, 1/4 inch tall, about $3 for a roll
  • Non-slip shelf liner, a $1 scrap piece cut to fit the cabinet floor
  • Rubbing alcohol and a rag, about $1 or already on hand
  • Scissors and a ruler, from your junk drawer
  • Your spice jars, for test-fitting

How to Build It

  1. Empty the cabinet completely, toss expired spices, and group the rest by how often you reach for them.
  2. Measure the cabinet width and depth, then check that your risers fit with at least an inch of clearance so the door still closes.
  3. Clean the front edge of each riser with rubbing alcohol and let it dry fully, since adhesive will not grip dusty or greasy plastic.
  4. Cut weatherstrip to the width of each tier, then peel and press it along the front edge, rubbing firmly for 30 seconds to set the bond.
  5. Line the cabinet floor with non-slip liner so the whole stack stays put when you pull out a jar.
  6. Stack the tiers with the tallest in back, then test-fit one jar per tier and press on it to check for wobble.
  7. Load the spices with labels facing out, heaviest jars on the bottom tier and everyday favorites on the top step.
DESIGNER TIP

Wait a full hour before loading jars so the adhesive cures, and use a clear lip rather than a white one so it disappears visually. If you have deep cabinets, put a second row of shorter jars behind the front one on the top tier for double the capacity.
