Build a Wooden Napkin Holder in 1 Hour for $15

Build a Wooden Napkin Holder in 1 Hour for $15

The weighted crossbar is what keeps napkins from sliding off or blowing away, and it's the one detail most store-bought holders skip.

Thanksgiving is days away, and nothing says chaotic table like napkins scattering the moment someone reaches for the gravy. The difference between a napkin holder that works and one that tips or lets stacks slide comes down to a single variable: a heavy, wide base paired with a bowed crossbar that presses down on the stack. The base lowers the center of gravity so a tug on one napkin does not topple the whole thing, while the crossbar adds steady downward pressure so the pile stays flat even in a draft. Get that balance right and you have a holder that outlasts every holiday dinner. This build takes about 1 hour and costs $15 total, using basic hand tools and a few pieces of pine or oak from the hardware store.

What You'll Need

  • Materials (~$12 total):
  • One 1x4 pine or oak board, 6 feet long, cut into pieces (~$7)
  • One 1/4-inch hardwood dowel, 12 inches long (~$1.50)
  • 1-1/4-inch wood screws, 4 count (~$1)
  • Wood glue (small bottle) (~$2.50)
  • Food-safe mineral oil or butcher block finish (~$0, or $5 if you need to buy it)
  • Tools (~$3, or free if you own them):
  • Hand saw or miter box
  • Drill with 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch bits
  • 120-grit and 220-grit sandpaper (~$3)
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Clamp (optional)

How to Do It

  1. Measure and mark your board for one 7-inch base, two 5-inch uprights, and a 7-inch spare piece. Accurate marks mean your pieces fit flush, which keeps the holder from wobbling.
  2. Cut each piece with a hand saw or miter box, keeping the blade square to the board. Square cuts give you tight joints and a base that sits flat on the table.
  3. Sand every piece with 120-grit, then 220-grit, rounding the edges slightly. Napkins snag on rough grain, and smooth edges also look more polished.
  4. Drill a 1/8-inch pilot hole near the bottom of each upright, then a 1/4-inch hole near the top for the dowel. Pilot holes prevent the wood from splitting when you drive the screws.
  5. Glue the uprights onto the base, spacing them 5 inches apart, then clamp or hold for a minute. Glue adds strength so the joint doesn't loosen over years of use.
  6. Screw through the base into each upright using the 1-1/4-inch screws. Screws lock the glue joint while it cures, so the uprights stay perfectly vertical.
  7. Insert the dowel through the top holes, adding a dab of glue at each end. A loose dowel lets you lift it to refill, but a snug glue joint on one side keeps it from falling out.
  8. Finish with two coats of food-safe mineral oil, wiping off the excess after 15 minutes. The oil seals the wood against spills and brings out the grain, and you can use it right away.
DESIGNER TIP

Professional tablescape stylists often tuck a small felt pad or cork disc under the base of any tabletop piece to protect wood surfaces and add grip. Stick one on each underside corner, and your holder will not slide when guests grab napkins or when the table gets bumped during a crowded holiday meal.
