Apartment Win
No pantry, no problem: a slim rolling cart slots into that awkward gap beside your fridge or wall and holds dry goods, snacks, and canned food. It's totally renter-safe because it's freestanding, so there's no drilling, no adhesive, and nothing to patch at move-out.
What You'll Need
- A slim 3- or 4-tier rolling utility cart, about 6-10 inches wide (approx. $25-$45)
- Clear stackable bins or small baskets sized to fit each tier (approx. $10-$15)
- Removable label stickers or a washable chalk marker for bin fronts (approx. $5)
- Optional: a few S-hooks to hang a bag clip or measuring cups from the cart frame (approx. $3)
- Tape measure (you probably already own one)
How to Do It
- Measure the gap beside your fridge, cabinet, or wall, noting both width and depth. Skip anything touching a heat vent. Nothing is marked or altered.
- Choose a cart a half inch narrower than the gap so it rolls in and out freely without scraping walls.
- Assemble the cart on the floor following its instructions. It uses simple snap or screw parts that belong to the cart only, never your walls.
- Sort your food into categories: snacks, canned goods, baking, pasta and grains. Group them into bins.
- Load heavy cans on the bottom tier for stability and light items like chips and cereal on top.
- Label each bin with removable stickers so everyone knows where things go. They peel off with no residue.
- Roll the cart into the gap. Pull it out when you need full access, and slide it away entirely at move-out with nothing left behind.
DESIGNER TIP
Choose bins in one consistent color or clear style so the cart looks like a deliberate built-in rather than a pile of groceries. Add a small felt pad under each wheel if your floors scratch easily.
