Cord Control
Tangled power cords under a desk make any small space feel messy. This under-desk cable tray trick hides them in one tidy spot using removable adhesive strips, so there are no screws, no holes, and no deposit worries. It peels off clean when your lease ends.
What You'll Need
- Wire mesh or plastic cable tray, about 16 inches wide, with a freestanding or clamp-free design (about $12-18)
- Large removable adhesive strips rated for 5+ pounds, such as heavy-duty damage-free strips (about $6)
- Reusable cable ties or hook-and-loop straps (about $5)
- Surge protector or power strip with a flat plug (about $10, optional if you already own one)
- Rubbing alcohol and a cloth to clean the surface first (pennies)
How to Do It
- Unplug everything and untangle your cords so you can see which ones are actually needed. Nothing is changed yet, so this step is fully reversible.
- Wipe the underside of your desk with rubbing alcohol and let it dry fully so the strips grip well.
- Press the removable adhesive strips onto the cable tray, then hold the tray against the desk underside for 30 seconds. Check the package for the weight limit. Strips release cleanly when pulled slowly and leave no residue.
- Place your power strip in the tray and lay the cords in so they run neatly to the back.
- Bundle the leftover cord length with reusable hook-and-loop straps, then plug everything back in. To undo it all, stretch each strip straight down along the surface until it releases.
DESIGNER TIP
Use a different color strap for each device, like blue for your laptop and orange for your lamp. Then you'll never have to hunt for the right plug again.
