Apartment Win
Short winter days and zero counter space don't have to mean no fresh herbs. This tiered hanging herb setup uses a tension rod across the window frame to hold small pots, so there's no drilling, no sticky residue, and nothing your landlord will ever notice at move-out.
What You'll Need
- Spring tension rod (sturdy, rated for 15+ lbs, fits inside your window frame): about $10
- Small lightweight pots or tin cans with S-hooks (3 to 4, with drainage saucers or trays): about $12
- Metal S-hooks (a pack of 6): about $4
- Twine or lightweight chain for hanging planters (optional): about $5
- Herb starter plants such as basil, chives, mint, or parsley: about $3 each
- Felt or rubber rod caps to protect the window frame: about $3
How to Do It
- Measure the inside of your window frame and choose a tension rod that fits snugly. Nothing is attached, so this leaves no marks.
- Pad the rod ends with felt or rubber caps to protect the frame finish. They slide off cleanly later.
- Position the rod at a height that catches sunlight but clears the sill and any blinds. Twist to tighten until it holds firmly.
- Prep your planters by adding a drainage tray or saucer under each pot so no water drips on the sill or floor.
- Hang each planter from an S-hook or twine loop, spacing them a few inches apart so leaves have room to grow.
- Test the load by gently tugging on the rod. If it shifts, tighten it or reduce the number of pots.
- Water lightly every few days and rotate pots weekly for even sun. At move-out, lift the pots off, untwist the rod, and the window is exactly as you found it.
DESIGNER TIP
Choose herbs that tolerate cool windowsills, like chives, parsley, and mint, and keep leaves from touching the cold glass overnight. Matching pots in one color make the whole wall look intentional.
