Cozy Fix
Cold, hard rental floors make a room feel colder and louder than it needs to be. Stacking a thick felt pad under a wool or shag rug adds insulation, cushioning, and style in minutes. Everything just sits on the floor, so nothing is glued, nailed, or permanent, and your deposit stays safe.
What You'll Need
- Dense felt rug pad (about $20-$35): thick enough to insulate, sized an inch or two smaller than your rug on every side.
- Wool, wool-blend, or shag area rug (about $40-$120): a thick pile holds warmth best.
- Scissors or a utility knife (already in your drawer): for trimming the pad to fit.
- Soft broom or vacuum: for prepping the floor.
- Optional removable-rated rug tape (about $8): only if corners curl, and only if labeled safe for your floor type.
How to Do It
- Clear the area and sweep or vacuum so grit doesn't scratch the floor under the pad. Nothing to undo here.
- Measure your rug and decide where it will sit, ideally under the front legs of your sofa or bed for a grounded look.
- Unroll the felt pad flat and let it relax for an hour so any creases settle out.
- Trim the pad so it sits about one inch inside the rug's edge on all sides. A hidden edge keeps it from peeking out or creating a trip hazard.
- Lay the pad down first, then center the rug on top. The weight alone holds everything in place with no adhesive.
- Smooth the rug from the center outward, then step across it to settle the layers together.
- Remove at move-out by lifting the rug and rolling up the pad. Both leave zero residue and zero marks.
DESIGNER TIP
Pick a rug with a slightly warm tone, like oatmeal, rust, or deep blue, to make the room feel cozier at a glance. If your rug is small, set it so the front legs of your main furniture rest on it to make the space feel larger.
