Dorm Hack
Rugs that slide, bunch, and curl at the corners are annoying and a trip hazard. This hack uses a simple non-slip rug pad and a smart layering trick to lock your rug in place. Nothing is glued, taped, or screwed down, so it lifts away clean and your deposit stays safe.
What You'll Need
- Non-slip rug pad (felt-and-rubber, PVC-free, floor-safe): about $15-25
- Sharp scissors or a utility knife for trimming the pad: already in your drawer
- Painter's tape for marking the trim line: about $5
- Microfiber cloth and mild floor cleaner: about $3
- Optional: removable-rated corner rug grippers for stubborn curls: about $8
How to Do It
- Clean the floor with a microfiber cloth and mild cleaner so dust doesn't undermine the grip. Let it dry fully.
- Flip your rug upside down and lay the rug pad on its back, rubber side facing the floor.
- Mark the pad about one inch inside the rug's edge with painter's tape. This keeps the pad hidden.
- Trim along the tape line with scissors, then peel the tape off. It leaves no residue.
- Place the pad on the floor, then lay the rug on top and smooth from the center outward.
- Tuck in optional corner grippers under any curling edges. They're removable-rated and lift away clean.
- Test by walking across and tugging a corner. When you move out, just lift the pad and rug. Nothing is stuck down.
DESIGNER TIP
Let a new rug lay flat under a few heavy books for 24 hours before adding the pad. Curled edges relax faster and your grip works even better.
