Dorm Hack
Tiny desk, endless clutter? A freestanding monitor riser creates a whole second level of storage right under your screen. It sits on top of your desk, needs no tools or adhesive, and lifts off in a second, so your deposit and your furniture stay safe.
What You'll Need
- Freestanding wooden or metal monitor riser with open shelf space (about $15-$30)
- Small stackable desktop bins or trays for pens, chargers, and notebooks (about $8-$12)
- Rubber or felt furniture pads, optional, to protect the desk surface (about $3)
- Adhesive-free cable clips or a reusable velcro tie to tame cords (about $5)
How to Do It
- Clear your desk completely so you can see exactly how much room you have to work with.
- Measure the space where your monitor sits and pick a riser slightly wider than the screen base so it stays stable.
- Place the riser at the back of the desk, adding felt pads under the feet if you want extra scratch protection. Nothing is stuck down, so it lifts off clean.
- Set your monitor or laptop on top, centered so the weight is evenly balanced.
- Slide your keyboard, notebooks, and bins into the space underneath. When you want a clear desk, just pull the keyboard out.
- Bundle cords with reusable velcro ties and tuck them behind the riser legs. Everything unties with no residue at move-out.
DESIGNER TIP
Use matching bins in one or two colors under the riser so the storage looks styled instead of stuffed. Keep daily-use items in front and rarely used supplies tucked toward the back.
