Mosaic Mirror Tray: The Grout Wipe-Off Timing Rule
Wipe the grout too early and you pull it out of the gaps; too late and it hazes over every bright tile for good.

Saturday is for color, and a mosaic tray delivers it in jewel tones you can set a candle on. The step that decides whether it looks glossy or ruined is when you wipe the grout haze. Grout cures fast, so wiping at about 15 minutes, while it is firm but not yet hard, cleans the tile faces without dragging grout out of the joints. Wait an hour and you are left with a cloudy film that hides the color you paid for. Set a timer, work in small sections, and the tray will look like boutique decor instead of a craft-table accident.
What You'll Need
- Flat wooden tray, unfinished or thrifted, about $8
- Mosaic glass tiles or mirror tile mix, assorted bold colors, about $10
- Tile adhesive or strong craft glue, about $5
- Premixed sanded or unsanded grout, small tub, about $6
- Damp sponge and soft cloth, from your cleaning stash
- Safety glasses and gloves, for cutting and grouting, about $3
- Paint and brush for the tray rim, optional, use what you have
How to Build It
- Prep the tray by sanding the base lightly and wiping off dust so the adhesive grips.
- Paint the rim and sides in a bold contrasting color and let it dry fully, about an hour.
- Lay out your tiles dry first, mixing colors in a pattern, and leave even gaps of about 1/8 inch.
- Glue each tile down with a thin layer of adhesive, pressing firmly, then let it cure for 24 hours. Wear safety glasses if you nip any tiles to fit.
- Spread grout over the tiles with a gloved hand or old card, pressing it into every gap.
- Wipe with a barely damp sponge after about 15 minutes, in small sections, using light diagonal strokes.
- Buff the tile faces with a soft dry cloth once a faint haze appears, usually after an hour.
- Cure the tray for 48 hours before use, and wipe it clean by hand only. Never soak it.
Pick a grout color that is darker than your tiles, such as charcoal against bright glass, because it makes every color look more saturated. Also seal the grout with a quick brush-on sealer after it cures so spills wipe away instead of staining.
