Cozy Win
Every rental has that one corner where laundry, boxes, and cords pile up. A freestanding folding screen hides it all in seconds and adds a pop of style. It sits on the floor on its own, so there are no holes, no adhesive, and no deposit worries.
What You'll Need
- A 3- or 4-panel folding room divider screen, about 5 to 6 feet tall ($40-$80)
- Self-adhesive felt furniture pads for the screen feet, to protect floors ($4)
- Optional: a lightweight throw blanket or fabric to drape over one panel for color (free, from your own linens)
- Optional: a small plug-in or battery LED string light to tuck behind the screen ($8)
How to Do It
- Choose the corner you want to hide and measure the width so the screen fits with a little room to spare.
- Attach felt pads to the bottom of each screen foot. They peel off cleanly and protect your floors.
- Unfold the screen in a zigzag shape. The angled panels are what keep it standing without any support.
- Position it a few inches from the wall so it does not touch or scuff paint. Nothing is attached to the wall.
- Tuck bins, laundry baskets, or cords behind it, keeping the heaviest items near the fold points for extra stability.
- Style the front with a draped throw or a plant on a stool. Lift it off and fold the screen flat when you move out; it leaves no trace.
DESIGNER TIP
Pick a screen with a slightly textured or woven finish so it reads as a furniture piece, not a cover-up. Keep it zigzagged wider than you think you need for rock-solid stability.
