This Ohio Home Was a 19th-Century Jail — Cells Included
Three bedrooms, three baths, three kitchens, and six original jail cells — that's the pitch for this Perrysburg, Ohio landmark, and Reddit has already started renaming the rooms.
Built in 1847 as the Wood County Jail
This 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom, 2,960-square-foot property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and served as the county jail until 1870, then as the Perrysburg town jail until 1899. The construction is unusually serious for a house: black walnut hand-hewn beams, four layers of handmade brick, and, in the jail section, three-foot-long stone blocks. The bullpen held six 5x6-foot cells, and one of the original 250-pound iron mesh cell doors is still intact today.
One Family, Over 100 Years
The town sold the building in 1918, and it's been in the same family ever since — purchased and renovated by Charles Hoffman in 1954, later home to Sharon Hoffman, whose daughter is now the listing agent. The layout still reflects its three one-bedroom-apartment history, though it's most recently functioned as a single-family home on a prominent downtown corner lot.
