This 50,000-Square-Foot NJ Mansion Has 21 Bedrooms
Some homes have a lot of rooms. This one has enough to lose your houseguests for days. The Crocker Mansion, also known as Darlington, sits on more than 12 acres in Mahwah, New Jersey, just 25 miles from Manhattan, with views of the Ramapo Mountains. Built in 1907 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the estate covers roughly 50,000 square feet and includes 21 bedrooms. Over the past century, it has been a railroad heir's showplace, a Catholic seminary, and the subject of national headlines.
Built for the Gilded Age
Railroad heir George Crocker built the mansion high on the hillside above an older house on the property, and he spared no expense. After the Crockers died, the estate changed hands, and from 1927 to 1984 it served as a Catholic seminary. One commenter said their great-great-grandfather was the executor who sold it to the church. The listing says it has since been meticulously restored, and Reddit went wild for the woodwork, with one commenter pointing out that the dining room is paneled in California redwood. Highlights include a Great Hall, a library, a restaurant-style kitchen with a prep kitchen, billiard and game rooms, a wine room, and a theater. There's also an indoor lap pool, a spa, a massage room, and a gym. Outside are an outdoor pool and cabana, gardens, fountains, a tennis court, a guest house, a gatehouse, and an eight-car garage.
A Headline-Making Chapter
The mansion's most recent history is its most dramatic. In 2023, federal authorities seized the estate after its then-owner, businessman Guo Wengui, was indicted on fraud charges. He was convicted in 2024, and the property is now back on the market. Note that the listing says its photos come from a previous listing. Reddit, meanwhile, was busy making plans. The top comment wanted to open a real-life version of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Others worried about how many cleaners and groundskeepers it would take to keep up with all those nooks and crannies. One commenter warned that with this many bedrooms, their friends would move in and never leave. The OP pointed out the upside: you probably wouldn't run into them for days.
