This 1870 Kansas Church Has a Pool, Sauna, and Arcade
Plenty of old churches have been turned into homes. Very few have been turned into an indoor amusement park. The Salem Chapel in Eudora, Kansas, was built in 1870 and is one of the town's most historic buildings. Today it's a four-bedroom, three-bath, 4,700-square-foot property that sleeps 18 or more. After a masonry-focused renovation in the early 2000s, it was enlarged and remodeled in 2025 into a vacation rental known on Airbnb as the Brickhaven Inn. Now it's up for sale, fully furnished.
Less Hymnals, More High Scores
Behind the stone walls and stained glass is an amenity list that reads like a resort brochure. There's an all-season heated indoor pool, a sauna, an indoor putting green, and a sports court for basketball and pickleball. Add arcade games, shuffleboard, a pool table, massage chairs, and an outdoor mini golf course, plus dining space for 18. Downtown Eudora's coffee shops and Pilla Park are a short walk away. The listing is clearly pitching this to investors. It notes that the house next door, a three-bedroom rental called The Gatehouse, is also for sale and could be paired for mega-group stays. A historic building across the street is also being renovated into a wedding venue, which the listing expects to open in 2027.
Not Everyone Is Saying Amen
Reddit loved the bones. Commenters called the original brick and stained glass gorgeous. The paint was another story. Matte gunmetal gray covers nearly everything, and one commenter responded by simply typing the word "gray" a few hundred times. Others defended it, pointing out that paint is the easiest thing in the world to change. The kitchen took the most heat. In a 4,700-square-foot house, the stove sits right up against the refrigerator, and one commenter delivered an impassioned theory blaming an obsession with symmetry. Sharp-eyed readers also noticed that the only laundry is reachable solely through the primary bedroom, that the second-floor bedroom has no bathroom, and that the floors are poured concrete. Plenty of people agreed the whole place feels designed for Airbnb, which, to be fair, it was.
