The Ann Arbor Penthouse Reddit Can't Find Words For

In downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan, a 5,000-square-foot penthouse designed by world-renowned decorator Robert Denning is on the market at $7,000,000. Three bedrooms, four baths, panoramic views of Michigan Stadium, rare pieces from the Versace Estate, a private elevator, and a carousel pig. Reddit arrived looking for adjectives. They settled on a thread-long argument between maximalist, hyper-maximalist, maximalismmaxxing, much-imalist, carnival chiq, and garish. The view, everyone agreed, should have led.

Robert Denning Does Ann Arbor

Robert Denning was one of the most celebrated and extravagant interior designers of the 20th century, known for layered, historically referential interiors of almost overwhelming density. This penthouse is his vision translated to Ann Arbor — a tribute to historic Parisian living with marble floors, custom crown molding, bespoke chandeliers, a two-story foyer with a sweeping staircase, and a grand living room with soaring ceilings and a fireplace. Walls of glass frame panoramic city views in every room, and two outdoor terraces connected by a striking catwalk extend the living space further. The fully appointed interiors include numerous historically significant furnishings, with rare pieces from the Versace Estate among the highlights. A chef's kitchen with Viking and Sub-Zero appliances, a spa-inspired primary bath, a home office, and a secondary upstairs living room complete the picture. A private elevator delivers you directly to the penthouse level. The carousel pig is somewhere inside.

Maximalist. Hyper-Maximalist. Maximalismmaxxing.

The Reddit thread's vocabulary breakdown is worth documenting. "Maximalist" arrived first with 113 upvotes. "Hyper-maximalist" followed. "Maximalismmaxxing" was proposed as an escalation. "Much-imalist" offered a gentler take. "Carnival chiq" suggested a different reference point entirely, with at least one commenter noting the decoration reads as commissioned by a serious carnival enthusiast. "Garish" was someone's first word. "Whimsical eclectic" arrived as a diplomatic option. One Top 1% commenter noted that "maximalist" is FAR too understated, in all caps. The listing's originator's husband landed on "tacky" while acknowledging he could see what they were going for. One commenter flagged that the portraits look like 1983 high school yearbook photos and noted — after a beat — they were perhaps talking about the room. The carousel pig, it was agreed, is probably worth something. They should have led with the view.
