Dramatic Pacific Ocean cliffs in Pacifica, California with erosion-exposed bluffs and waves crashing below
Real Estate

For $1.2M You Too Could Live on the Edge of Death

This is not the first time 100 Palmetto Avenue in Pacifica, California has appeared on r/zillowgonewild. Reddit has been tracking this listing for years, and every time it resurfaces, the leading comment is the same: the cliff looks a little closer. Three bedrooms, two baths, 3,000 square feet, panoramic Pacific Ocean views, rotting floors, broken tiles, erosion netting on the cliff face, no railing on the deck, and an asking price that Reddit has calculated at roughly the cost of the land minus demolition expenses. The listing calls it coastal paradise.

The View Is Real. The Cliff Is Also Real.

The property is genuinely striking — a cliffside home overlooking the Pacific with private steps down to the beach, panoramic views, and the sound of waves as a permanent ambient feature. Formerly home to Dollaradio, it carries a certain coastal California cultural cachet. The listing invites you to imagine waking up to crashing waves and calls the location unparalleled. This is all accurate. The white material visible on the cliff face is a grade beam and erosion netting for soil stabilization and water diversion, which the listing does not mention but Reddit identified immediately. The house itself is not being maintained — rotting floors and broken tiles are visible in the listing photos — which one commenter reasonably attributed to the fact that maintaining a home about to fall into the ocean is a complicated investment decision. The deck has no railing. Asked why anyone would put a railing on the deck, one Top 1% Commenter replied: and what is going to hold the railing?

Pacifica Is Well, Pacifica

Pacifica's cliffside erosion problem is not new, and this listing is not its first casualty. A former resident recalled living in an oceanfront apartment complex there with extraordinary views until the building flooded, mushrooms grew through the front room carpet, and a couple of years later the whole thing slid down the cliff and was demolished. There's a whole street in Pacifica going in one at a time, as multiple commenters confirmed. Reddit's investment thesis for this property ranged from grim to creative: buy for a million, wait for the cliff to collapse, find yourself the owner of a picturesque little oceanside valley, build a new house at the bottom, sell for a hundred million. The counterpoint — that you could do all of that work and the next Niño washes it away — was also raised. Another six months, one commenter calculated, and it'll be beachfront. And cheaper.

The Internet Has Thoughts
