A Greenhouse With a House Growing Inside: Sweden's Naturvillan Lists on Lake Vänern

Reddit titled this one "A greenhouse with a house growing inside" — and that is both the joke and the literal description. Naturvillan is a fully off-grid 2022 residence on the shores of Lake Vänern in western Sweden, wrapped in a greenhouse along its entire southern facade, with skylights above the bed for stargazing, a roof terrace with lake views for miles, and its own systems for heating, electricity, water, and nutrient recycling. It is listed at 7,850,000 SEK — approximately $750,000 USD. Reddit immediately wondered about rainstorms.

What Naturvillan Actually Is

The 124-square-meter house is built around a central residential structure enclosed on the south side by an unheated greenhouse that functions as a climate buffer, growing space, and primary living extension. The greenhouse entrance greets visitors with a battery station on one wall and growing beds for fruit and vegetables on the other. Figs, three varieties of vine, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, peppers, lettuce, and Mediterranean herbs grow along the plant wall. In the depths of a Swedish winter, broccoli and kale can be harvested fresh using non-woven fabric over the growing boxes — a fact that earns the listing's claim that the home "extends the growing season." The main residence below has a living room with gigantic sliding glass panels opening to the greenhouse and the lake, a solid ash-topped kitchen with a wood stove for cooking and heating water, and a bedroom with skylights on either side of the bed for viewing the sky and stars. The upper floor has a large flexible room and a shared balcony. A service passage at the top of the greenhouse allows solar panel maintenance and chimney sweeping. The roof terrace offers lake views in every direction.

The Reddit Questions — and the Answers

Reddit's first question was about rainstorms. The greenhouse is uninsulated but fully protected from rain, snow, and wind — so the answer is: fine, actually, though dramatic. The second commenter wondered about summer heat inside a greenhouse and then correctly deduced that this is Scandinavia, where summer heat is a fairly theoretical concern. Lake Vänern is in Sweden's Västra Götaland county, about 90 kilometers north of Gothenburg — a latitude where a Mediterranean garden inside a greenhouse is a genuine climate achievement rather than a cooling problem. The home is completely off-grid, with integrated solar cells providing electricity, a 750-liter accumulator tank and FTX ventilation system managing heating, and its own water and nutrient recycling. The listing describes it as "the house of the future and the next generation's self-sufficient natural house." The ping pong table option in the greenhouse suggests someone has also thought about winter entertainment.
