A $3.5M Dome Home Above the Clouds in NC
Perched above the clouds on 28 acres outside Asheville, North Carolina, Azura Gardens is asking $3,495,000 for a handcrafted monolithic dome home, two guest cottages, a built-in observation beehive, a spring-fed creek, pollinator gardens, and panoramic mountain views that are, by all accounts, genuinely spectacular. Reddit loves the views. Reddit has questions about the permits. And someone noticed the doors on the upper level that appear to open directly into thin air.
The Dome, the Beehive, and the R-84 Insulation
At the center of the estate is a roughly 3,400-square-foot monolithic dome home that Reddit was quick to describe as looking homemade from the outside — one commenter noted they'd want to see the permits and inspections before getting too comfortable. The interior, however, surprised more than a few skeptics. Custom woodwork, arched details, spa-like bathrooms with custom tubs and a steam shower, a wood stove, and exceptional insulation with an R-value of 84 make this a genuinely well-considered structure. The built-in observation beehive is either the most inspired feature on the property or the most alarming, depending entirely on your feelings about bees in the living room. Two income-producing guest cottages — a 295-square-foot Moroccan-aesthetic Stone House and a 295-square-foot Japanese Wabi-Sabi Creek House — round out the residential offerings.
Awesome Views. Some Questions.
The 28 acres surrounding the dome are legitimately extraordinary — a year-round creek, private wells, multiple natural springs, fruit trees, rose gardens, pollinator gardens, and trails for hiking, biking, or horseback riding, all with sweeping Blue Ridge panoramas from sunrise to sunset. The views are not in dispute. What Reddit did flag, however, are the upper-level doors on the exterior that appear to open onto nothing — no balcony, no deck, just open air over a North Carolina mountainside. One commenter suggested there may have been a balcony planned that never materialized. Another observed simply that some people really do live in a bubble, which felt accurate on multiple levels. Located 10 minutes from Weaverville and 17 minutes from downtown Asheville, this is a property that rewards the right buyer with an extremely specific vision.
