These High-Profile Celebrities Prefer To Live Off The Grid

After living a life in the spotlight, these celebrities have chosen to live a quiet life in the suburbs to raise their families or escape the paparazzi. For most, they haven't completely forgone lavish lifestyles, and their ritzy homes reflect it. Check out these celebs who you thought would live in LA but don't.

Adele

Adele chose to move away from the city and instead into this cozy London suburb. Her cottage is more on par with a mansion, but it does deliver her some much-needed peace apart from her busy music career. Her biggest piece of advice to disconnect is to keep off of social media.

Daniel Day-Lewis

Actor extraordinaire Daniel Day-Lewis lives in County Wicklow, Ireland. He cites many sweet childhood memories to the Irish countryside, and the notoriously private actor wouldn't choose to live any other way. County Wicklow is also the perfect vacation or retirement site due to how quiet and picturesque it is.

Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock has always been partial to New Orleans and has been a homeowner there since 2009. Most celebrities choose to live in one of the industry's biggest cities, like L.A. or New York, but not her. NOLA offers her life out of the public eye, despite the cooker-cutter decor of her home.

Robert Redford

Prolific actor and founder of the Sundance Film Festival, Robert Redford chooses to spend most of his time in rural Utah. While he'd always led a quiet life, he doesn't feel like he's missing out by not living in a big city. The best part about his naturistic lifestyle is staying close to Glen Canyon and Dark Canyon.

John Mayer

While John Mayer was working on his "Born and Raised" album, he lived in a house in the middle of rural Montana. While he does spend time in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, writing in the wilderness was exactly what he needed to get into that indie headspace. He also cites wildlife, open space, and farms as his reasons for moving to Montana.

Wiz Khalifa

After signing an enormous record deal, fans expected Wiz to buy a McMansion in one of music's most happening cities. Instead, he bought a 4,000 square foot home in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, just 18 miles from Pittsburgh. He leads a relatively private life outside of the Hollywood spotlight.

Shania Twain

Shania Twain was one of the 90s most successful pop-country singers. However, the fame and fortune of a mainstream musician's lifestyle didn't appeal to her, so she moved to the quiet and picturesque town of La Tour-de-Peliz in Switzerland. She enjoys spending downtime with her family and exploring the nature surrounding her Riviera town.

Woody Harrelson

Not many celebrities are as dedicated to environmental conservation as Woody Harrelson. He owns a home in Maui, Hawaii, which keeps him very off the grid. His home is powered by solar panels and he drives a car that runs on biofuel.

Tina Turner

The iconic singer could have bought any home in the United States that she wanted, but she opted for a beautiful home on Lake Zurich in Switzerland. It's a stunning white mansion with tons of privacy. It sits right on the water, making it an architect's dream.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp, the eccentric that he is, will settle down anywhere but Hollywood. He has farms in Florida, Kentucky, and the South of France. His most recent move was to a small cottage in the Bahamas.

Julia Roberts

You'd think the A-lister would love the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. She actually opted for a quieter home in the suburbs of Malibu, where she lives with her family. The pretty woman turned this home into one of the town's most gorgeous mansions.

George Clooney

George Clooney values the privacy of his family over anything else. The Clooney's have resided in Lake Como, Italy for years, untouched by paparazzi. His stunning villa includes 30 rooms and the most picturesque views you've ever seen.

Michael Keaton

Hollywood weirdo Michael Keaton has always hated the city. He prefers to live on his ranch in Montana when he's not on a movie set. He enjoys fishing, hiking, camping, and any other activity that brings him and his family closer to nature.

David Letterman

Another fan of Montana, David Letterman decided to move west after decades of living in New York. Once his late-night show ended, he decided he'd had enough of the city and took his family into nature. Montana seems to be a pretty popular spot for the rich and famous.

Matthew McConaughey

Hollywood's favorite southern boy Matthew McConaughey decided to leave Malibu for his Texas roots. He raises his children in the mansion that he bought down south with his wife, and movie sets on either coast are an easy plane ride away. Texas must feel pretty lucky to have him back home.

John Travolta

John Travolta and family live in this mansion-turned-airplane hangar in Florida. The actor is also an avid pilot, and the property sits on enough private space for there to be not one, but two runways. John now lives there with his children following the recent passing of his wife.

Donald Glover

Glover, famous for roles on Atlanta, Community and his singing career under the moniker Childish Gambino, is one of Hollywood's most elusive stars. He rarely gives interviews or is seen out in public. One of the best places to escape paparazzi is in Hawaii, where he spends most of his time. His social media presence is also incredibly small.

Bruce Willis

Hollywood tycoon Bruce Willis has managed to stay out of the spotlight for most of his career, except for his messy divorce from Demi Moore. Besides that, he prefers to spend most of his time in Hailey, Idaho, a place where not many celebrities would choose to live. He did recently sell the home, so who's to say which unknown location he'll move to next.

Demi Moore

Much like ex-husband Bruce Willis, Demi Moore also shares a love of Hailey, Idaho. Actually, she loved it so much that when they split, she bought a house in the same town so visitation with the kids would be easier. Hopefully, she doesn't also move to wherever Bruce is off to next, though.

Eminem

Eminem grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and he's nothing if not loyal to his home state. When he made it big, he didn't move up, but instead to the smaller town of Rochester, Michigan. He's managed to stay out of the spotlight for as long as he's been famous.

Bon Jovi

The "Livin' On a Prayer" singer has been a native to New Jersey his entire life. He shares a mansion with his family there as well as in New York City, but he's never been a fan of the Hollywood lifestyle. Despite the quiet life he leads, he'll surely be earning royalties from his hit single til the day he dies.

Elijah Wood

The Lord of the Rings star is a known recluse, so no wonder he chose a low-key home located in Texas. He used to live in Los Angeles, but he gave up the busy life of the city and industry to relocate to a quiet suburb. He can still be on call to shoots on either coast in Texas, a convenient central location.

Tom Hanks

Despite the high profile careers of Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson, they live in Ketchum, Idaho, away from the spotlight. He has one of the most successful filmographies of any actor, yet would never choose to live in Hollywood. He is a fan of real estate, however, and he and his wife own several properties in California and beyond. Ketchum still seems to be their unexpected favorite, though.

Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively

The powerhouse couple prefers to raise their two young daughters in upstate New York, away from the big city. Good thing Lively is nothing like her Gossip Girl alter ego and actually prefers the seclusion. Bedford, New York is the perfect place to grow their family in peace.

Kelly Clarkson

The "Since U Been Gone" singer and American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson loves her lavish lifestyle, but not the hustle of a big city. She prefers to live in Tennessee, the home of country music. She is able to further her career while maintaining a level of privacy to raise her children.

Harrison Ford

Hollywood giant Harrison Ford gave up on a life of luxury long ago and now lives in Wyoming. While his roles of Indiana Jones and Han Solo will surely never be forgotten, he wishes he could be. He lives a quiet life in the rural midwest with his wife, Calista Flockhart.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence never lost her love for Kentucky. She grew up in the Appalachian Mountain Range, and it's where she still resides today. While she has various properties in other cities for work, she spends most of her time in seclusion.

Bill Murray

This Hollywood giant prefers to spend his time in Charleston, South Carolina. He often runs into every day people while out in town because he refuses to live like a celebrity. Most people who meet him say the level of fame he has achieved is not reflected in his personality and he's a super down to earth guy.

Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep lived in Connecticut before moving to LA to further her career in the 1980s. However, she missed the quiet life of New England that she eventually moved back. She resides the Salisbury region and enjoys her privacy.

Ted Danson & Mary Steenburgen

This iconic duo resides in Arkansas, probably the last place you'd expect. While The Good Place star Ted Danson and his wife Last Man on Earth actress Mary Steenburgen are popular within the Hollywood sphere, they like to keep their private life separate. They live a normal life in a town that isn't highly populated by tourists.

Christian Slater

Christian Slater, once a teen heartthrob, now lives in Coconut Grove, Florida. While some might see it's a little early to retire to a slow-moving life down south, Slater really enjoys the tranquility. However, he still has a somewhat active acting career.

Vera Farmiga and Renn Hawkey

The Annabelle and The Conjuring actress Vera Farmiga doesn't live in a haunted house like her characters do. Instead, she and rocker husband Renn Hawkey live in a quiet suburb in Hudson Valley, New York. They are currently raising their two children quietly out of the spotlight.

Usher

Usher loves living in Atlanta. He even references his home city in many of his songs. However, he was born in Dallas, Texas, and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The huge hip hop scene Atlanta has to offer is what drew Usher to the city in the first place, and he has contributed many hit albums back to it.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

The billionaire couple Kim and Kanye custom built their Bel Air home. It sits at $20 million and is essentially an entire compound. That much space is necessary when you want a growing family and already have a handful of siblings as big as the Kardashian clan.

Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell and his family live in a gorgeous mansion in Beverly Hills. The former American Idol judge and recording icon bought a $1 million security system, complete with fingerprint scanners that would put James Bond to shame. The home is worth $29 million overall.

Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy's estate is located in New Jersey and is apparently the most expensive property ever sold in the area. With a price tag of $30 million, it boasts 32 rooms and feels more like a resort than a home. But I guess when the comedian has to entertain his guests, he knows he'll never run out of space.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia Di Rossi

The talk show host and her wife reside in Los Angeles in a 13,000 square foot mansion. It has 9 bathrooms, 6 bedrooms, and was designed by celebrity architect Quincy Jones. The exterior walls are made of glass and the overall property cost $38 million.

Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe and his family live in Santa Barbara, and his $42 million home looks more like a cozy resort. He and his jewelry designer wife live there with their two sons, and he splits his time between home and television sets in LA. The house has 20 rooms with custom features like a gym, resort-style pool, and a game room.

Beyoncé & Jay-Z

This massive Bridge Hampton, New York mansion is home to Queen B, Jay-Z, and their three children. The master suite is bigger than most people's apartments, and the home measures a total of 2,800 square feet. For the modest price tag of $43 million, it doesn't look like they'll be selling any time soon.

Ryan Seacrest

The television personality lives in Beverly Hills in a home he bought from another television personality, Ellen DeGeneres. He paid $49 million, and the property also has three guest houses. The main house has 9 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms.

Tiger Woods

Of course, Tiger Woods' Florida home has a golf course built onto the property. There is also a professional gym and huge windows so you can see the Atlantic Ocean from any room. With his-and-hers bathrooms in the main suite, this house has a price tag of $60 million.

Angelina Jolie

Pre-split, Brangelina owned a beautiful mansion together in the South of France. Now, it's just hers. She raises her six children in the chateau, and it sits on 1,000 acres of land. The amazing castle façade is priced at $61 million.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey's Montecito estate has 10 fireplaces, 14 bathrooms, and 6 bedrooms all while resting on 42 acres of land. There is also a rose garden, an art gallery, a tea house, a wine cellar, a barn, a guest house, and a massive pool. When you spend your whole life giving back to others, it only makes sense that you should treat yourself to your dream home.

Jennifer Lopez

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson's Costa Rica house is his favorite of all his properties. “Playa Barrigona” sits on 500 acres of land and cost $29 million. The 7 bedroom, 8 bathroom home includes coral rock carvings, Italian and Spanish tiles, and has several balconies overlooking the pool, courtyard, and open-air kitchen and dining room.

Gwen Stefani

Gwen's Hollywood Hills home has been nicknamed "The Summit," and is worth $35 million. There is an infinity pool, an outdoor garden, a greenhouse, and pretty much any other luxury you can imagine. The best part is definitely the stunning view of the San Fernando Valley.

Lori Loughlin

Lori Loughlin's $35 million Bel Air mansion is now for sale following her college admissions scandal. The Mediterranean-style villa features exposed wood ceiling in the foyer, floor- to-ceiling glass doors, and a basket weave pattern stone tiled floor. All of these personal touches were thanks to the couple, who gave the house a complete makeover after they bought it.

Celine Dion

Celine Dion's massive Jupiter, Florida estate is Bahama-inspired and worth $38 million. She sold the property earlier this year, and it includes a water park with a lazy river. The house is 10,000 abd features an open concept design. The best feature is undeniably her custom closet, complete with automated clothing racks and shoe carousels.

P. Diddy

P. Diddy's $40 million, 2-story European-style home is his favorite of all his properties. It sits on an acre of land in Holmby Hills, California, and has 8 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a gym, a wine cellar, a theater, and an underwater tunnel that leads out to the grotto/pool. A guest house also includes a salon, spa, and steam room.

Will & Jada Pinkett-Smith

Located in Malibu, the Smith's 25,000 square foot home is worth $42 million. With 150 acres of land to work with, the couple has called this home their "spiritual endeavor." In addition to 9 bedrooms, a state-of-the-art recording studio, and a meditation room, this state of the art home was built entirely by hand.

Sting

It sits on 3 acres of land that overlook the Pacific ocean, and the 4 bedroom, 5 and a half bathroom Hacienda-style villa was built in 1944. Despite the luxuries, Gates is one of the most charitable rich people in the world.

Steve Martin

Comedian Steve Martin is a fan of playing music in North Carolina, and he even owns a home there. The intense success he had while filming various films has made him dislike the level of fame he recieved. However, he does now have a successful bluegrass music career, so I guess the spotlight really does just love him.

Mark Ruffalo

The Hulk doesn't live in LA like most actors, but he does live in New York. Just not in the city.
