DESIGNER TIP

For small spaces, consider a corner banquette with a pedestal table, which eliminates bulky table legs that can interfere with seating. Include a mixture of open and closed storage beneath bench seats—closed compartments conceal less attractive items while open cubbies provide easy access to frequently used items like placemats or children's activities. Create a cohesive look by choosing bench cushion fabric that coordinates with your kitchen décor, then add seasonal accent pillows that can be easily changed for a fresh look. Finally, don't overlook the wall space—a small gallery of framed family photos, a decorative mirror to reflect light, or a chalkboard for menus and messages can personalize your nook.
