Grout Revival: Refresh Your Tile Without Replacement

Transform tired tile surfaces with a simple grout renewal that delivers dramatic results

Before and after of bathroom tile with newly refreshed grout
HOME IMPROVEMENT

Even beautiful tile can look dated and dirty when grout becomes stained, cracked, or discolored. Instead of undertaking the messy, expensive process of completely replacing tile, refreshing the grout alone can transform your bathroom or kitchen for a fraction of the cost. This weekend project requires more elbow grease than technical skill, making it perfect for DIY enthusiasts looking for high-impact results without specialized expertise.

Materials & Tools

• Cleaning Supplies: Oxygen bleach, vinegar solution
• Scrubbing Tools: Grout brush, old toothbrush
• Grout Removal Tools: Grout saw, oscillating tool
• Fresh Grout: Sanded or unsanded (match existing)
• Grout Colorant: Premixed colored grout paint
• Application Tools: Grout float, sponge, toothbrush
• Sealing Products: Grout sealer, applicator brush
• Protection: Painter's tape, plastic sheeting
• Safety Gear: Gloves, eye protection, mask

Refreshing Methods

  1. Evaluate your grout condition. Determine whether your grout needs cleaning, coloring, or complete replacement:
    • For surface stains and discoloration: deep cleaning may be sufficient
    • For persistent staining with intact grout: colorant application works well
    • For cracked, crumbling, or missing grout: removal and replacement is necessary
  2. Method 1: Deep Cleaning (Least Invasive)
    • Prepare the area by removing all items from the surface and covering adjacent areas.
    • Create a paste using oxygen bleach powder and warm water.
    • Apply the paste to grout lines using a grout brush or old toothbrush.
    • Allow the mixture to sit for 15-20 minutes, keeping it damp by misting with water.
    • Scrub vigorously along grout lines, paying extra attention to stained areas.
    • Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry the surface with old towels.
    • For stubborn stains, try a commercial grout cleaner specifically formulated for your tile type.
  3. Method 2: Grout Colorant Application (Moderate)
    • Clean grout thoroughly using the method above and allow to dry completely (24 hours).
    • Apply painter's tape to protect tiles if using a different color than existing grout.
    • Use a small brush to apply premixed grout colorant to the grout lines, working in small sections.
    • Allow the first coat to dry according to product instructions (typically 1 hour).
    • Apply a second coat for consistent color coverage.
    • Remove any colorant from tile surfaces immediately with a damp cloth.
    • Let colorant cure completely before exposing to moisture (generally 24-48 hours).
  4. Method 3: Grout Replacement (Most Invasive)
    • Remove damaged grout using a grout saw or oscillating tool with a grout removal attachment.
    • Remove grout to a depth of at least ⅛" but avoid damaging tile edges or underlayment.
    • Vacuum debris thoroughly and wipe tiles with a damp sponge.
    • Mix new grout according to package instructions (sanded for joints wider than 1/8", unsanded for narrower joints).
    • Apply grout diagonally across tile joints using a rubber grout float, pressing firmly into spaces.
    • Remove excess grout from tile surfaces with the float held at a 90° angle.
    • After 15-30 minutes, wipe tiles with a damp sponge using diagonal strokes across joints.
    • Allow grout to cure 24 hours, then polish off any remaining haze with a dry cloth.
  5. Apply sealer for lasting protection. Regardless of which method you choose, apply a quality grout sealer 48-72 hours after completion to protect your refreshed grout from future staining. Reapply sealer annually for optimal protection.
DESIGNER TIP

Consider changing your grout color completely for a dramatic transformation that can modernize your entire space. White or light-colored grout creates a clean, seamless look that visually expands the area, while dark grout (charcoal, navy, or black) creates definition and contrast that highlights tile patterns and shapes. For a truly contemporary update in shower areas, consider epoxy grout when replacing—though more expensive and challenging to work with, its superior water and stain resistance eliminates the need for sealing and significantly extends the time between grout refreshes.
