Glow & Bloom: DIY Spring Candle Holders

Transform ordinary candle holders with fabric, ribbon, and seasonal elements for a fresh spring look

Collection of DIY spring-themed candle holders with fabric and ribbon embellishments
DIY PROJECTS

Candles add warmth and ambiance to any space, and spring is the perfect time to refresh their presentation with seasonal touches. Rather than purchasing new seasonal decor, transform plain or outdated candle holders with simple embellishments that celebrate spring's colors and textures. This project allows you to customize holders to perfectly complement your home's palette while creating a cohesive collection that can be displayed throughout the season. With just a few basic supplies, you can create beautiful accent pieces that look store-bought but reflect your personal style.

What You'll Need

Base Materials:
• Plain glass candle holders (pillar, votive, or jar style)
• Tea light holders or small glass containers
• Ceramic or metal candle holders for refinishing
• Spring-scented candles in complementary colors
Decorative Materials:
• Fabric scraps in spring patterns or colors
• Ribbon in various widths (grosgrain, satin, organza)
• Twine or jute cord
• Pressed flowers or dried botanicals
• Small decorative elements (butterflies, birds, etc.)
• Decorative paper (scrapbook or origami paper)
Tools and Adhesives:
• Fabric scissors
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks
• Mod Podge or similar decoupage medium
• Paintbrushes in various sizes
• Acrylic paint (for ceramic or metal holders)
• Measuring tape or ruler

How To Do It

  1. Fabric-wrapped candle holders:
    • Clean and dry your glass holders thoroughly
    • Measure the circumference and height of your candle holder
    • Cut fabric to size, allowing a 1/4 inch overlap
    • Apply Mod Podge to the glass surface with a brush
    • Wrap fabric around holder, smoothing out air bubbles
    • Secure the overlap with additional Mod Podge
    • Seal the entire fabric surface with a top coat of Mod Podge
    • Allow to dry completely (approximately 24 hours)
  2. Ribbon-embellished holders:
    • Measure ribbon to fit around holder with a small overlap
    • For a layered look, use ribbons of different widths
    • Secure ribbon with hot glue, placing dots rather than a continuous line
    • Add a bow or decorative knot as a focal point
    • Consider layering contrasting ribbons for more visual interest
  3. Pressed flower candle jars:
    • Arrange pressed flowers or leaves on clean glass surface
    • Carefully apply Mod Podge over and under the botanicals
    • Use a soft brush to avoid tearing delicate flowers
    • Allow to dry, then apply 2-3 more coats for protection
    • Finish with a ribbon or twine accent around the rim
  4. Painted ceramic or metal holders:
    • Clean surface thoroughly and let dry completely
    • Apply a base coat of acrylic paint in a spring color
    • Use painter's tape to create stripes or geometric patterns
    • Add details with a small brush or stencils
    • Seal with clear acrylic spray for durability
  5. Twine-wrapped rustic holders:
    • Apply a line of hot glue at the bottom of the holder
    • Press one end of twine into the glue and let set
    • Wrap twine tightly around the holder, adding dots of glue occasionally
    • Secure the end with glue and trim excess
    • Add a small sprig of artificial lavender or a fabric flower
  6. Paper decoupage holders:
    • Cut decorative paper into desired shapes (flowers, leaves, etc.)
    • Apply Mod Podge to glass surface
    • Position paper elements, overlapping if desired
    • Seal with additional coats of Mod Podge
    • Add ribbon trim at top and bottom edges
  7. Creating a cohesive collection:
    • Use a consistent color palette across different styles
    • Vary heights and widths for visual interest
    • Combine different techniques while maintaining a unified theme
    • Group holders in odd numbers (3 or 5) for the most appealing display
DESIGNER TIP

Professional designers often approach candle holder styling with the concept of "high-low pairing" to create sophisticated arrangements. Try combining your handcrafted holders with a few higher-end store-bought pieces for a curated look that doesn't appear overly crafted. Another designer secret is to consider the quality of light each holder will produce—translucent fabrics and papers will create a soft, diffused glow, while more opaque coverings will cast interesting shadow patterns. For safety, always ensure any decorative elements are at least two inches away from where the flame will reach, and consider using battery-operated flameless candles in holders with more delicate embellishments. Finally, for a truly elevated presentation, create "candle moments" throughout your home using the same design elements but in different configurations, creating a subtle thread of continuity as guests move from room to room.
