Give Cards New Life: Upcycle Holiday Greetings Into Gift Tags

Transform sentimental memories into charming, one-of-a-kind gift toppers

Vintage Christmas cards transformed into decorative gift tags with pinking shear edges and ribbon ties arranged on wrapped presents
DIY PROJECTS

That beautiful stack of Christmas cards you've been saving because they're too lovely to throw away? They're about to become your secret weapon for gift wrapping that looks expensive and thoughtful without spending a dime. Old holiday cards feature gorgeous vintage artwork, metallic accents, and designs you simply can't find in store-bought tags anymore. By cutting them into custom gift tags, you're creating unique pieces that add nostalgic charm while keeping precious memories in circulation instead of hidden in a box. This project takes about 30 minutes to transform a year's worth of cards into dozens of tags, costs absolutely nothing if you already have basic craft supplies, and gives your wrapped gifts that handmade, personal touch that store-bought tags never achieve. Plus, recipients often comment on the beautiful vintage tags, creating conversation starters about the art and memories behind each one.

What You'll Need

  • Card Materials:
    • Old Christmas cards from previous years
    • Holiday cards with beautiful front designs
    • Vintage cards for extra character (check thrift stores)
  • Cutting Tools:
    • Pinking shears for decorative zigzag edges ($8-12)
    • Regular scissors for straight cuts
    • Paper cutter or ruler for precision (optional)
  • Finishing Supplies:
    • Hole punch (single or decorative shapes)
    • Ribbon, twine, or baker's twine in festive colors
    • Pen or markers for writing names

Creation Steps

  1. Sort through your saved Christmas cards and select ones with beautiful front designs—look for vintage artwork, interesting textures, metallic accents, or images that would make attractive standalone tags.
  2. Plan your cuts by examining each card front and identifying the best sections to feature, avoiding any areas with writing or damage while maximizing the most attractive imagery.
  3. Cut rectangles approximately 2 x 3 inches using pinking shears for that charming zigzag edge, though you can adjust sizing based on the card design and your preferred tag proportions.
  4. Trim any inside flaps or backing paper away so you're working with single-layer tags that won't be too bulky when attached to presents.
  5. Punch a hole in the top corner of each tag, positioning it far enough from the edge that it won't tear but close enough to leave maximum design space on the tag face.
  6. Thread ribbon, twine, or baker's twine through each hole—cut pieces about 8 inches long so you have enough length to tie onto packages securely.
  7. Write recipient names on the back of tags using a coordinating pen or marker, leaving the beautiful front design uncluttered and ready to shine.
  8. Store your completed tags in a decorative box or envelope until wrapping time, keeping them flat and organized so they're ready to grab when you need them throughout the season.
DESIGNER TIP

Professional gift wrappers create visual interest by cutting tags in multiple shapes—try traditional rectangles, circles using a large craft punch, or even silhouettes that follow the card's main imagery like a tree or ornament shape. For extra dimension and durability, back your favorite thin cards with coordinating cardstock before cutting, which makes them sturdier and creates a beautiful two-tone effect. If you receive cards with personal messages you want to preserve, photograph or scan them before cutting so you maintain those memories digitally while still giving the beautiful artwork a second life. Consider sorting tags by color family or theme as you create them, which makes it easy to coordinate tags with your wrapping paper for that professionally styled look.
