Fast Bathroom Refresh: Upgrading Fixtures for Maximum Impact
Transform your bathroom with simple hardware swaps that deliver designer style

Updating bathroom fixtures is one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort renovations you can tackle. By swapping out dated faucets, showerheads, drawer pulls, and towel bars for coordinated modern versions, you can completely transform your bathroom's look without the mess, expense, or time commitment of a full renovation.
What You'll Need
Sink faucet in your chosen finish
Shower head and/or tub faucet
Cabinet hardware (knobs or pulls)
Towel bars and hooks
Toilet paper holder
Shower curtain rod (if applicable)
Adjustable wrench
Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead)
Plumber's tape
Silicone caulk (clear or matching color)
How To Update Them
- Turn off water supply - Locate and shut off the water valves under the sink or at your home's main shutoff before replacing any plumbing fixtures.
- Update sink faucet - Disconnect supply lines, remove old faucet mounting nuts, lift out old faucet, clean surface, install new faucet following manufacturer's instructions.
- Replace shower head - Unscrew old shower head (use a wrench with cloth to prevent scratching), clean threads, apply plumber's tape to threads, and install new shower head.
- Change cabinet hardware - Measure existing holes (center to center for pulls), remove old hardware, and install new knobs or pulls.
- Install towel bars - Remove old bars, patch any wall damage, and install new towel bars, ensuring they're level and secured to studs when possible.
- Replace toilet paper holder - Remove old holder, install new one following the same mounting pattern or fill and re-drill holes as needed.
- Swap shower curtain rod - Remove old rod, install new decorative rod at the standard height of 75-77" from the floor.
- Apply finishing touches - Add a thin bead of silicone caulk around faucet bases, allow to dry, then turn water back on and check for leaks.
To create a truly custom look, consider upgrading to a statement shower head with multiple functions like rainfall and massage settings. For smaller bathrooms, swapping traditional towel bars for modern hooks can free up wall space while adding visual interest. Matte black and brushed brass continue to dominate bathroom design trends, but for a timeless look that will age well, consider brushed nickel or chrome. If your existing sink or shower have separate hot and cold handles, upgrading to a single-handle design instantly modernizes the space while making temperature control more convenient.
