Evergreen Elegance: Draping Gorgeous Garlands Through Your Home

Transform doorways, railings, and mantels into festive focal points with lush greenery

INTERIOR DESIGN

Garlands are the quintessential holiday decoration—versatile, traditional, and instantly festive. Whether draped along staircases, hung over doorways, or laid across mantels and tables, these lush decorative elements bring the beauty of evergreens indoors while creating visual impact throughout your home. With the right techniques for hanging, securing, and embellishing, you can create professional-looking garland displays that become the highlight of your holiday decor scheme.

Garland Essentials

Base Options:
• Fresh pine, fir, or cedar garland
• High-quality artificial garland
• Mixed greenery garland
• Pre-lit or unlit options
Hanging Supplies:
• Floral wire or twist ties
• Command hooks or removable adhesive
• Zip ties (for outdoor use)
• Ribbon for wrapping or hanging
Enhancements:
• String lights (battery or plug-in)
• Ornaments with wire attachments
• Ribbon (wired for structure)
• Berries, pinecones, or dried elements

Garland Styling Guide

  1. Measure your space: Determine the length needed for your installation, adding extra for natural draping and swags.
  2. Prepare your garland: Fluff artificial garland or soak fresh garland in water overnight to maintain freshness.
  3. Add lighting first: If incorporating lights, weave them through the garland before hanging, working from the center outward.
  4. Secure mounting points: Install hooks or anchors approximately every 2-3 feet along your hanging surface.
  5. Hang the garland: Position your garland, creating natural-looking swags between mounting points.
  6. Secure properly: Use floral wire wrapped around the garland and attachment points, hiding the wire within the foliage.
  7. Add embellishments: Once secured, attach ribbons, ornaments, and natural elements throughout the garland.
  8. Make final adjustments: Step back frequently to ensure symmetry and adjust fullness as needed.
DESIGNER TIP

For a designer-worthy garland installation, layer multiple types of greenery for dimension and texture rather than relying on a single variety. Start with a basic faux or fresh pine garland, then enhance it by tucking in sprigs of eucalyptus, cedar, boxwood, or magnolia throughout. This creates a fuller, more luxurious look with rich texture. For staircases specifically, secure the garland to the inside of the banister rather than draping it over the top to prevent interference with the handrail's functionality while maintaining the beautiful cascading effect.
