Entryway Transformation: Creating a Multi-functional Mudroom Bench
Combat clutter with a stylish storage bench that organizes your high-traffic entry area

A mudroom bench is the ultimate entryway organizer—offering seating for removing shoes, storage for seasonal accessories, and hooks for hanging coats and bags. This weekend project creates a drop zone that corrals clutter, protects your floors, and welcomes guests with style, even if you don't have a dedicated mudroom space.
What You'll Need
Base cabinets or wooden storage cubes
3/4" plywood for bench top
1x4 boards for face framing
Wall hooks or coat rack
Beadboard or shiplap for backing (optional)
Storage baskets or bins
Cushion foam (2-3" thick)
Upholstery fabric
Staple gun
Drill and screws
Paint and painting supplies
How To Build It
- Measure your space - Determine the ideal dimensions for your mudroom bench based on your entryway size. Standard height is 17-20" with a depth of 16-20".
- Choose your base - For easiest installation, use pre-made base cabinets or storage cubes arranged side by side.
- Install wall backing - If desired, add beadboard or shiplap to the wall behind your bench area for a finished look.
- Secure the base - Position your base units and attach them to the wall studs for stability. Connect multiple units together if using.
- Add the bench top - Cut plywood to size, allowing for a 1-2" overhang at the front and sides if desired. Sand all edges smooth.
- Create a cushion - Cut foam to the size of your bench, wrap with batting, then cover with your chosen fabric, stapling underneath.
- Install hooks - Mount hooks or a coat rack on the wall above the bench at appropriate heights (approximately 48" from the floor for children, 64" for adults).
- Add trim - Install 1x4 boards as face framing to cover any seams and create a built-in look.
- Paint and finish - Paint all wood surfaces in your chosen color, then add storage baskets and cushions to complete the look.
For a cohesive look, choose fabric for your bench cushion that coordinates with your home's color scheme but is durable enough for heavy use—outdoor fabrics or performance velvet are excellent options. Consider adding labeled baskets for each family member to keep smaller items organized, and install a floating shelf above the hooks for additional storage or seasonal decor. For muddy boots and shoes, place a washable indoor/outdoor rug or boot tray in front of your bench to protect flooring.
