Cozy Comfort: Make No-Sew Fleece Tie Blankets

Create warm, snuggly throws by simply knotting fleece edges for perfect September evenings

Cozy fleece tie blankets with knotted edges in warm colors displayed in comfortable living room setting perfect for autumn evenings
DIY PROJECTS

I discovered fleece tie blankets during one of those first chilly September evenings when I was desperately wishing I had more cozy throws around the house! The beauty of this project is that it requires absolutely zero sewing skills – just cutting and knotting – but produces the most wonderfully soft and snuggly blankets that everyone fights over. There's something incredibly satisfying about the rhythmic process of cutting fringe and tying knots while watching a movie, and before you know it, you have a beautiful blanket that looks like it came from an expensive boutique. These blankets have become my go-to gift for friends and family because they're so personal and practical, plus they wash beautifully and get softer with every use. Now that the evenings are getting cooler, I love having a basket full of these homemade throws ready for spontaneous snuggle sessions on the couch!

Fleece & Supplies

  • Fleece Fabric: Two coordinating pieces, each 1.5-2 yards for throw-size blanket ($15-30)
  • Cutting Tools: Sharp fabric scissors for clean cuts through double layers ($8-15)
  • Measuring Tools: Ruler or measuring tape for consistent fringe strips ($5-8)
  • Marking Supplies: Fabric chalk or washable markers for cutting guides ($3-6)
  • Pattern Weights: Books or weights to hold fabric layers together ($0-5)
  • Work Surface: Large table or clean floor space for layout ($0)
  • Total Per Blanket: $25-60 depending on fleece quality and size chosen

No-Sew Construction

  1. Layer fleece pieces with right sides facing out, aligning edges carefully
  2. Cut 4-inch squares from each corner to prevent bunching when tying
  3. Mark cutting lines every 1 inch around entire perimeter for consistent fringe
  4. Cut 4-inch deep strips through both layers simultaneously for matching pairs
  5. Tie corresponding strips together using simple overhand knots, working systematically
  6. Keep knots consistent in tightness to maintain even edge appearance
  7. Trim any uneven strip ends for neat, professional-looking finish
  8. Fluff finished blanket in dryer on low heat to maximize softness and loft
DESIGNER TIP

Professional seamstresses know that the secret to beautiful tie blankets is consistency in your fringe cutting and knotting technique. Here's my signature method: use a ruler to mark every inch, then cut all strips before starting to tie – this prevents the fabric from shifting and ensures perfectly even fringe. My favorite design trick is choosing fleece colors that are either complementary (like navy and cream) or analogous (like different shades of blue) for sophisticated, cohesive results. Pro tip: make the knots snug but not over-tight – the fleece will relax and the knots will settle beautifully after the first wash. Also, consider making matching sets in different sizes – throw, lap, and baby sizes – for gifts that coordinate throughout a home!
