Corner Garden: Build a Simple Tiered Plant Stand

Transform any corner into a stunning plant display with this easy wooden tower

Beautiful wooden tiered plant stand with round shelves at different heights displaying multiple plants in bright corner setting
DIY PROJECTS

I built my first plant stand after getting frustrated with trying to arrange different-sized plants in my living room corner – they either got lost on the floor or looked awkward on my furniture! This simple wooden tower completely transformed that dead corner into the most gorgeous plant display that makes everyone think I have some kind of secret green thumb. The beauty of this design is how it creates natural levels that showcase each plant's unique character while maximizing your growing space in minimal floor area. There's something incredibly satisfying about building something that's both functional and beautiful, especially when it helps your plant babies thrive by getting them proper light exposure. Plus, every time someone compliments my "expensive-looking" plant display, I get to proudly tell them I made it myself for less than $30!

Wood & Hardware

  • Round Wood Pieces: 3-4 circular wood slabs in graduated sizes, 12", 10", 8" diameter ($15-25)
  • Dowel Rods: 1" diameter wooden dowels, 3-4 feet length each ($8-12)
  • Center Support: Thicker dowel or wooden post for main stability ($5-8)
  • Hardware: Wood screws, washers, drill bits for pilot holes ($8-12)
  • Finish Materials: Wood stain or natural oil finish, sandpaper ($12-18)
  • Tools: Drill, measuring tape, level, pencil for marking ($rental if needed)
  • Total Cost: Under $50 for materials to create stunning multi-level plant display

Building Steps

  1. Plan your heights and spacing based on your plants' light needs and visual appeal
  2. Sand all wood pieces smooth, starting with coarse grit and finishing fine
  3. Mark center points on each round piece for consistent dowel placement
  4. Drill pilot holes for dowels, ensuring they're perfectly perpendicular to surfaces
  5. Assemble structure by connecting round pieces with dowels at planned heights
  6. Test stability and adjust connections as needed for solid, wobble-free stand
  7. Apply finish of choice, allowing proper cure time before use
  8. Style with plants of varying heights, textures, and pot sizes for maximum impact
DESIGNER TIP

Professional plant stylists know that the key to stunning tiered displays is the "rule of thirds" – position your most eye-catching plant about one-third up from the bottom, not at the top or center. Here's my signature technique: alternate between hanging and upright plants on different levels to create visual rhythm and movement. The secret to stability is using slightly thicker dowels than you think you need – better to overengineer than have wobbles! Pro tip: drill small drainage holes in each platform and place waterproof saucers under pots. This prevents water damage while maintaining the clean look. Also, position the stand where it gets bright, indirect light so all your plants thrive at their different heights!
