Autumn Preview: Late Summer Pillow Refresh Project

Transform your space with rich jewel tones that bridge summer brightness and fall coziness

Elegant living room featuring handmade throw pillows in deep emerald and sapphire tones arranged on neutral sofa with warm lighting
INTERIOR DESIGN

There's something magical about those final weeks of summer when you start craving the cozy vibes of fall but aren't quite ready to pack away all that brightness. That's exactly when I discovered the power of jewel-toned throw pillows – they're like the perfect bridge between seasons! Rich emeralds and deep sapphires bring sophistication without the heaviness of traditional autumn colors, creating a space that feels both current and timelessly elegant. I've been making my own pillow covers for years, and this simple weekend project never fails to completely transform a room's energy. The best part? You can swap them out as easily as changing your mind, making it the most budget-friendly way to refresh your entire living space.

Fabric & Supplies

  • Main Fabrics: 1 yard each of emerald green and sapphire blue velvet or linen ($25-40 per yard)
  • Accent Textures: ½ yard metallic gold or cream for contrast details ($15-20)
  • Pillow Inserts: 18" x 18" down-alternative or feather inserts, 4-6 pieces ($60-80 total)
  • Notions: Matching thread, invisible zippers or envelope closure materials ($15)
  • Optional Trims: Piping cord, decorative braiding, or fringe ($20-30)
  • Tools: Sewing machine, fabric scissors, measuring tape, pins, seam ripper

Sewing Process

  1. Cut fabric pieces to 19" x 19" for each pillow, adding seam allowances for your chosen closure method
  2. Plan your color arrangement, mixing jewel tones with one neutral or metallic accent piece per grouping
  3. Prepare any decorative elements like piping or contrast panels before assembling the main pieces
  4. Pin front and back pieces together, right sides facing, leaving opening for insert
  5. Sew around three sides with ½" seam allowance, reinforcing corners with backstitching
  6. Finish the opening with your preferred closure – envelope back, zipper, or hidden snaps
  7. Turn covers right side out, push out corners crisply, and press seams for professional finish
  8. Insert pillow forms and arrange on sofa, varying sizes and textures for maximum visual impact
DESIGNER TIP

The secret to making jewel tones work in any space is the 60-30-10 rule with a twist. Use your dominant jewel tone (emerald or sapphire) for 60% of the pillows, a complementary jewel tone for 30%, and save that final 10% for a metallic or cream accent that makes everything pop. Interior designers also know this trick: vary your pillow sizes within the same color family – try 22", 18", and 14" pillows in the same emerald, then add texture with one lumbar pillow in sapphire velvet. This creates visual rhythm that looks intentionally curated, not just "matchy-matchy."
