Villains like Gaston and Commodus have earned their place as some of films all-time greatest villains, but did you ever consider that even the nicest characters, like Snow White or Belle, also have their issues? Find out the characters that fans deemed the worst from these classic movies.
Danny Zuko
When Sandy arrives for her first day at Rydell High, Danny straight up ignores her and pretends he did not just spend a very romantic summer with her. And why? She's pretty, talented, and immediately in with the Pink Ladies. He deserved to have that car door slammed on him.
Dolores Umbridge
When Dolores Umbridge made her debut in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, she was undeniably even more cold-hearted than Voldemort himself. She unnecessarily torments and abuses Harry, singling him out among the rest of the students. Remember the scene where she brands "I will not tell lies" onto his hand during detention?
Sid
This toy-destroyer from Toy Story didn't know how to treat his things, so the toys got their revenge. Many fans have said that "this child was PURE EVIL" in comments, and no one would disagree. He was definitely a stereotypical bad kid.
Kate Andrich
Though fans love Emilia Clarke, this character from Last Christmas was downright unbearable. The endless whining was too annoying for viewers to handle, and she sort of ruined the movie. It had the potential to be a cute rom-com, but Kate was too unlikeable.
President Snow
This power-hungry president from The Hunger Games series was a notable un-favorite among fans. Some have even said, "just looking at him made me want to punch him in the face." Katniss had the same thought because they're furious enemies through the entire franchise.
Andie Anderson
Though Kate Hudson did shine in How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days, her character was pretty coldhearted and remorseless. What kind of boss makes a writer prey on an innocent guy in order to drive him crazy? The whole plot is a little insane.
Denethor
Denethor, from The Lord of the Rings franchise, was one of the most annoying characters by far. He goes crazy with grief after his son dies, and makes the life of his servants pretty miserable because of it. In the books, he orders his servants to burn him to death so he can be put out of his misery.
Colonel Tavington
The Patriot's Colonel Tavington is one of the movie's more remorseless characters. He kills Heath Ledger's character without a second thought, burned a church full of innocent people, and was a ruthless killer in battle. Keep your distance from this guy.
Meredith Blake
You have to give credit where credit is due, and Meredith Blake really knew how to be an ace gold digger until Annie and Hallie got in the way. However, once she really got fed up with the twins' antics, she unleashed a whole new level of anger that pissed off viewers. She's still one of the most iconic girl bosses to ever do it, though.
Grandpa Joe
Willy Wonka's Grandpa Joe laid up in bed for years, and then when Charlie walks in with the golden ticket, he leaps up and is ready to tour the factory. Like... what? The family suffered from extreme poverty, so don't even mention his "tobacco money." This guy was absolutely useless.
Christian Grey
Though it's marketed as a hot romance movie, the Fifty Shades of Grey leading man is manipulative, emotionally abusive, and self-centered. He doesn't know how to be in a healthy relationship and the "contract" he drafts in order to "date" Anna is bonkers. These movies should not be a model for what normal couples look like.
Mary Jones
Mary Jones is Precious's mother in the movie Precious, and she's downright evil. She blames her daughter for her own abuse and never helps her out of her situation or even attempts to stop the abuse. She's a rightfully hated character.
Eli Sunday
Viewers have said they couldn't wait for this character from There Will Be Blood to get killed off. Eli Sunday is a selfish and manipulative pastor who uses the church to get people to confess to traumas and "sins" as a power move.
Briony Tallis
Briony is the entire reason that the couple in Atonement don't end up together. She accused Robbie of raping her cousin, Lola, which didn't happen. She spends the rest of the movie trying to "atone" for her mistake, but she never fully earns forgiveness.
Cal Hockley
Cal just couldn't deal when Rose wanted to be with Jack instead of him. Though their affair was quick, Cal finds a way to ruin it. He frames Jack for stealing the diamond necklace and then selfishly escapes the sinking ship ahead of everyone else. He was the most controlling and judgmental fiancé there ever was.
Mother Gothel
Mother Gothel kidnapped Rapunzel when she was a baby and then locked her up in the tower just so she was the only one who could have access to her magical hair. She denied Rapunzel of an entire life, and when Rapunzel finally escapes, she lies to her and says Flynn abandoned her. She didn't deserve any of that magic.
Commodus
Many people thought the evil emperor in Gladiator was a vile, unwatchable character, so props to Joaquin Phoenix and those writers. He had a passion for combat, and because he was a skilled fighter himself, he earned a cult following in the Colosseum. Phoenix won a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2001 thanks to this role.
Biff Tannen
Various iterations of Biff Tannen serve as the antagonist in the Back to the Future franchise. He's selfish, dumb, and an unnecessary bully in all films. However, he essentially rapes Lorraine in the first movie, something that's a little glossed over. He's a bad guy, there's no question about that.
Jim
The main protagonist in Edward Scissorhands is Jim, Kim's boyfriend who hates Edward because he thinks he's going to steal his girlfriend. He doesn't have any sort of sad, redeeming backstory. He's just a violent, thuggish guy.
Agatha Trunchbull
Miss Trunchbull is the extra tough headmistress from Matilda. She's famous for her torture chamber, "The Chokey," and she even participated in the shot put event in the 1972 Olympics. Is this not enough proof that she's terrible?
Ben
Bradley Cooper plays Ben in He's Just Not That Into You, and he cheats on his wife and lies to her about quitting smoking. It's just red flag after red flag with him. Eventually, his wife kicks him out and his mistress breaks up with him.
Guy Woodhouse
The whole plot of Rosemary's Baby is wild, but this guy definitely enabled the events. He totally stood by while his wife was possessed, and then takes none of the responsibility. What's so great about him?
Wild Bill
Wild Bill from Green Mile is one of the most unsettling characters to ever appear onscreen. Played by Sam Rockwell, the main antagonist of this prison film is a rapist and murderer who framed John Coffey, landing him in Cold Mountain Penitentiary.
Nurse Ratched
One reviewer wrote, "She was a manipulative megalomaniac and treated the patients under her care with contempt (at best) and outright cruelty (at worst). It was particularly hateful because her character subverted all our expectations of a nurse!" Good luck if you ever end up in the hospital with a Nurse Ratched-type as your caretaker.
Corinne Dollanganger
Corinne is the mother of the children kept in the attic in Flowers in the Attic. She upright abandons them and even tries to kill them in order to make her life easier, which leads to all sorts of traumatic incidents, like incest. It's revealed that Corinne's own deceased husband was actually her uncle, making this story incredibly stomach-churning.
Nate
Andi's boyfriend Nate in The Devil Wears Prada was completely unsupportive and judgmental of her new job working with Miranda Priestly. He accuses her of totally changing and losing her sense of self rather than admiring her for taking on a hard job (and doing really great at it). She was better off without him, tbh.
Star-Lord
A lot of people have some specific beef with Star-Lord in the Infinity War film. He keeps the crew from stealing the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos, totally foiling their plan to defeat him. Even Chris Pratt had to respond to fans' grievances about the movie. He couldn't keep his feelings about Gamora's death in check for, like, 2 seconds.
Lily Moscovitz
Lily was a terrible friend at the beginning of the first Princess Diaries movie. When Mia gets a makeover (and looks incredible), Lily totally judges her for it. She says she looks terrible and only comes around to Mia after she learns she's a princess and wants to have her on her talk show. Talk about self-centered.
Ruth Dewitt Bukater
Rose's mom from Titanic was a BAD. MOM. She was selfish and only wanted to encourage Rose to marry Cal so the family would have money again. She antagonized Jack for being poor, and when the ship was sinking, she was worried the lifeboats wouldn't be seated "by class." Truly delusional.
Mark
The classic "To Me, You Are Perfect" signholder from Love Actually was actually a "creepy stalker" according to the actor. He shouldn't have put his friend's wife in that position because she didn't reciprocate his feelings, and he made their friendship awkward. Not to mention that he filmed only her during her wedding, which is just a blatant admittance that he was hot for her.
Murray Duvall
Murray Duvall from Clueless was a really bad boyfriend. He was sexist and always assumed his female friends were on their periods if they were in a mood. He also isn't shy to call anyone names, and he's a pretty selfish guy because he doesn't consider his girlfriend's feelings. Like, ever.
Percy Weasley
Percy Weasley was Head Boy of Gryffindor, and he never let you forget it. According to fans, he's a "brat" and a "sell-out who should have been the Weasley who died instead of Fred." There are too many Weasley's to keep track of, tbh.
Franklin Hardesty
Though Franklin Hardesty did die in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, fans wish he'd died sooner. He was annoying and useless and frankly just got in the way of things. He didn't serve the plot and his mannerisms were bothersome.
Annie
Annie's constant complaining in Bridesmaids completely detracts from the hilarious plot. Her petty problems are very fixable and she doesn't fix them, she just whines. Honestly, she should have been replaced in the wedding party, I'll say it.
Legolas
While Legolas was a shining star in the Lord of the Rings films, his character was ruined in The Hobbit films. Fans felt like he was a completely different character in the resurgent series. The elf that they came to love in the originals was completely out of place that it felt uncomfortable.
Harry Potter
It's understandable that a kid given the title of "the chosen one," even though it is for something pretty terrifying, would grow up with a chip on his shoulder. He's entitled and only performatively brave, making his character sort of a waste. He also wouldn't have lasted long without the genius Hermione Granger by his side. The boy was dumb.
Julianne Potter
Julianne Potter is so selfish in My Best Friend's Wedding. She and her best friend, Michael, made this deal that if they were both unmarried by a certain age, they'd get together. The thing is, they'd already dated and it didn't work out. Now, Michael is actually getting married, and Julianne is bent on tearing the wedding apart. What kind of friend is that?
Jake Sully
So while on the planet Pandora, Jake Sully had every opportunity to tell Neytiri that the humans were there to invade their community, and he just didn't. he was a terrible protagonist for Avatar. Then, when things got really bad with the humans, he asked Neytiri for her help. Men!
Daniel Hillard
Daniel Hillard, aka Mrs. Doubtfire, comes up with this entire convoluted scheme in order to get what he wants. He lies to everyone and disguises himself as a nanny, Mrs. Doubtfire, and uses it to spend more time with his kids rather than just being mature and talking to his ex-wife about custody. It all blows up in his face, of course.
The McAllister Family
To be fair, Kevin McAllister's entire family kind of sucks. They mistreat him in Home Alone, and he's only like, eight years old. When he has a tantrum (as kids do) and tells his mom he hates his family, she says, "Maybe Santa will bring you a new one." Um, ouch.
Mary Poppins
Fans gripe over Mary Poppins' condescension despite her prim and proper appearance. Also, she sort of... kidnaps those kids? For the day? That's definitely not cool as a caregiver.
Lilo Pelekai
Even though it's the whole plot of the show, what kind of kid goes to an animal shelter and chooses an actual alien monster rather than a dog? Also, her sister is doing the most to take care of her and Lilo is purposefully difficult.
Lightning McQueen
Lightning McQueen undergoes a serious reality check, but not before he's a self-centered jerk who only cares about winning races rather than supporting his friends. Also, he's tasked with one job in the first movie, and that's to repave a street, and he does it so poorly because he doesn't care rather than considering all of the other cars he's going to let down if he doesn't pull through.
Snow White
Believe it or not, people have beef with Snow White. She was allegedly pretty condescending to the dwarves, who selflessly let her stay with them. Also, she was not the brightest... who just accepts an apple from someone who doesn't look at all sketchy?
Olaf
Olaf is apparently too annoying and emotionally dim for the plot of Frozen. He detracts from the serious moments with unnecessary banter that many older fans don't find funny. He should have... melted.
B.E.N.
This Treasure Planet character is "gratingly annoying" and derails the plot. The rest of the characters are unique and "defy stereotypes," but B.E.N. just ruins all that creativity. He didn't even need to be in the movie.
Genie
This one might be an unpopular opinion because Genie drives the plot of Aladdin, but several Disney fans thought he was too obnoxious and over-the-top. He does have great songs, but that classic slapstick Robin Williams humor just isn't for everyone.
Woody
Woody is just whiny and petty and also hates Buzz out of jealousy in the first movie. He's Andy's favorite toy, and he certainly acts like it. The movies probably would have been better if someone else was in charge.
Belle
The opening scene from Beauty and the Beast is literally about Belle singing to the townspeople about how she's better than them. Though she selflessly trades places with her father in the Beast's castle, she isn't exactly a peach about it. At least she had a happy ending.
Prince Florian
Unsure why Prince Florian from Snow White gets all the credit for being the hero in this story. It's a little creepy how it all works out, honestly. He comes along, kisses this young (random) girl he's just met, and then kidnaps (?) her. What???
Merida
Merida goes to extreme lengths to prove that she's annoyed with her mom. Instead of just pouting in her room for a minute, she straight up poisons and curses her mom and turns her into a bear. Lesson learned, just stick with the silent treatment next time.
Princess Aurora
The most annoying thing about Aurora is how forgettable she is in Sleeping Beauty. She has a total of five lines, maybe. She doesn't really move the plot, the plot just sort of happens to her.
Ariel
For lack of a better word, Ariel is incredibly shallow. Sure, she dreams big, but she tosses aside her family and friends for some guy she's met once. She learns her lesson because getting what you want comes with a price.
Anna
Anna doesn't really understand all the trauma her sister has endured by being locked away in isolation for most of her life. Instead, she's enamored by some guy she's only just met and doesn't listen to reason. She was the more annoying sister of the two.
Mr. Incredible
The moral of The Incredibles is that Mr. Incredible had a midlife crisis. He put his whole family at risk because he felt "inadequate." His entire family and the rest of the superhero population in his city could have died because of his insecurity.
King Agnarr
This man locked his own daughter away because she was different in Frozen. He refused to acknowledge her and forced her to hide her powers. In hindsight, her powers weren't that bad.
King Triton
King Triton not only hated humans but also destroyed all of Ariel's belongings in order to protect her. What does that even mean? He definitely just did it to spite her so she knew he would always be more powerful.
John Smith
Do we really need to explain that John Smith from Pocahontas had the "white man's burden" mentality and also did not recognize Pocahontas's people as people? He calls the Native Americans "savages," and only has a change of heart about the mission to tear down their land after he falls in love with her.
Disney's Comic Relief Characters
Most comic relief characters, like the gargoyles from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, are annoying and sometimes take over the plot too much. They got a ton of screen time — definitely more than they deserve. Without them, we could get a more meaningful backstory about the main characters.
Gaston
Gaston is sexist, pigheaded, and a bully in Beauty and the Beast. He only wants to marry Belle because she's pretty and then hopes to make her into a stay-at-home wife and mom. He doesn't recognize her intelligence or dreams at all.
