A-List Celebs Who Refuse To Drink

Most people think that being a celebrity is about attending high-profile parties and events while sipping on the finest alcohol one can buy... which can be true! But, not every celeb subscribes to the party-all-the-time lifestyle. Here are some A-Listers who have said no to booze.

Tim McGraw

Tim McGraw told Ellen DeGeneres back in 2008 that he was stone-cold sober. "I think it's a personal choice... When it gets to the point where you think it's affecting you adversely and it's affecting your relationships." He made the decision to change his lifestyle for the better. 

Chris Martin

Chris Martin is the famed frontman of Coldplay. The band was a huge group of partiers in their early career, and Martin eventually hit a wall with that lifestyle. He's been sober for a while now and plans to keep it that way for the sake of his career and his kids.

Tyler, The Creator

Most people would assume that musicians are all about that party lifestyle... but not Tyler! He even has one verse in a song that says, "Not to drugs, I never spark it." He's just not interested in feeling that way.

Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson is one of the best actors out there. Even he struggled with alcohol and substance abuse issues, especially in the '70s and '80s. He eventually realized that he needed to get sober so that he could continue his life with purpose and not have to worry about choosing his addiction over his career. Seemed like it was a good move!

Zac Efron

The High School Musical star is completely sober after his time in rehab back in 2013. In 2016, he told Elle Magazine, "You get out of life what you put in. Crossing the line is what leads to greatness." He obviously felt held back by using alcohol, so he chose a different path!

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez said one thing about alcohol and smoking: "I think it ruins your skin." That's a good enough reason! She did say that she would take a celebratory sip of alcohol during a toast, but that's about as crazy as she gets. That must be why she's so youthful!

Eric Clapton

The '70s and '80s were all about drugs and alcohol. Eric Clapton fell victim to the lifestyle and struggled a lot with addiction. In 1986, he made the life decision to get 100% sober due to the birth of his son. He's been sober ever since!

Kate Moss

Kate Moss used to be known for her partying ways. She's been clean for two years, taking on a more "holistic" approach to her life. Close friend DJ Fat Tony said, "Kate's been clean for over two years. Me and my sober mates now have a better time than we ever did when we used to drink and take drugs."

50 Cent

50 Cent is not about drugs or alcohol anymore. He told Piers Morgan that he used to sell drugs in his early years just to survive, but never took drugs or drank alcohol. It just didn't agree with him, and he was fine being sober. 

Colin Farrell

The Irish actor celebrated 10 years of sobriety in 2018. He told Ellen DeGeneres that he struggled with his addiction when he first got to Hollywood but found a great coping mechanism. "Now, I do a bit of yoga, I like a nice hike and I drink dragon nasal juice." Whatever works! 

John Mayer

John Mayer had his revelation after a six-day hangover after Drake's 30th birthday party. "I looked out the window and I went, 'OK, John, what percentage of your potential would you like to have? Because if you say you'd like 60, and you'd like to spend the other 40 having fun, that's fine,'" he told Complex. "'But what percentage of what is available to you would you like to make happen? There's no wrong answer. What is it?' I went, '100.”’

Kim Kardashian

Kim has famously not been interested in alcohol. She's had her moments here and there but chooses to stay away from the substance for her own health. Her sister Khloe once said, "Kimberly does not drink alcohol whatsoever. Pregnant or not, she's just never been into it."

Rob Lowe

Actor Rob Lowe won the Spirit of Sobriety award in 2015 for celebrating 25 years of clean living! He credited most of his success to his wife, Sheryl Berkoff. "She inspired me to get sober. She's put up with my defects of character as they call it. In sobriety, the lessons keep coming if you're lucky enough to be sober as long as I have." 

Natalie Portman

What's Natalie's secret to youth? Her lack of alcohol consumption! "I didn't really go to high school parties, and yeah, I didn't touch pot till I was in my 20s... I didn't get flat-out drunk until I went to college. But I think that's a good thing in many ways." She figured out that alcohol wasn't really her thing in college! 

Elton John

Elton John has been open about his struggles with drug use, alcoholism, and his eating disorder. He decided to get sober in 1990. "Within six months I became sober, and clean, and have been for the last 28 years," he told The Fix in an interview back in 2018.

Demi Lovato

The former Disney Channel star has been open about her struggle with sobriety. In order to stay on top of her battles, she chooses to "California sober." Lovato has been transparent about her non-linear road to sobriety, struggling with many relapses. 

Rumer Willis 

Rumer Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, decided to share her path to sober living on Twitter. "My decision to become sober wasn't out of a need necessarily, it was more just that I did 'sober January' and I just decided to keep going." Sometimes, people simply feel better without alcohol in their lives.

Dax Sheppard

Dax Sheppard's choice to forego alcohol was a true turning point in his life. He decided to eliminate alcohol from his daily life over 15 years ago. "I now have a wife, and babies, and some self-esteem."

Shania Twain

Shania Twain chooses to live a clean life. Not only is she vegetarian, but she also does not use drugs or alcohol. She's also very adamant about keeping those around her clean and healthy. "I like a clean band. I don't like drugs. I don't like alcohol. I like to have clean-living people around me."

Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper talked about his sobriety in a GQ interview back in 2013. When he was 29, something in his mind just clicked about using alcohol. "I felt if I continued it, I was really going to sabotage my life." 

Tyra Banks

International supermodel turned talk show host Tyra Banks once made a statement about alcohol when a fan asked her if she drank. She said, "I feel like I've been very lucky because I don't really have an addictive personality. I've never had any drugs, and I had a little taste of alcohol when I was 12 years old, but that's about it." 

Kristin Davis

Believe it or not, the overly sweet Sex and the City star struggled with alcohol abuse so much that she didn't think she'd make it past the age of 30. "I realized it was not going to end well. I got into the acting program, it was very challenging, I was hungover and I wasn't doing so well in my classes. I thought, 'Do you know what? It's going to be one or the other. I can't really have both.'"

Jada Pinkett Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith is a superstar actor and mother. She's been in the spotlight for decades and has amassed a following around the world. In a 2010 Us Weekly profile, she was asked to reveal 25 things the world didn't know about her. Number five was that she hadn't consumed alcohol since the early '90s!

Robert Downey Jr. 

Robert Downey Jr. has had a tumultuous relationship with drugs and alcohol. He's been open about his battles and his sobriety. In a Vanity Fair interview in 2014, he revealed that he had been sober for over 10 years.

Christina Ricci

Christina Ricci was a successful child actor and was best known for her role as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family. In 2008, she revealed that she struggled with alcohol and decided to get sober. "I went through a normal kind of late teens, early 20s drinking, but it was a choice I made because I didn't think it was very good for my life."

Naomi Campbell

Even supermodel and actor Naomi Campbell has sworn off of alcohol! During an exclusive interview with Life & Style back in 2013, she revealed, "I gave up drinking alcohol. Not drinking makes me a lot happier." When you're in a career that involves a lot of social drinking, this is a huge change!

Lana Del Rey

Lana del Rey talks a lot about her struggles with alcohol in her music. She revealed that she struggled with alcohol in her early teens and was sent to a boarding school at the age of 14 so she could quit her addiction. "It's been nine years since my last drink," she told British GQ in 2012. 

Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis is a famous British pop singer whose chart-topping single "Bleeding Love" is still played over radios today! She revealed in a candid interview that she doesn't drink whatsoever. "I don't think. I hate the taste of alcohol. When my debut single went No. 1, I celebrated with non-alcoholic champagne." 

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale is one of the main characters in the hit series Pretty Little Liars. She decided to live a sober life at the same time that she chopped all of her hair off. Obviously, she was going through it! "I tried really hard to be the social butterfly," she said after years of trying to find her place in the Hollywood party scene. 

Jack Osbourne

Jack Osbourne is the son of Ozzi and Sharon Osbourne. He and his family were thrust into the reality spotlight early on in his life. The premature fame caused Jack to turn to alcohol in an unhealthy way, which he nipped in the bud quickly. In 2013, he sent out a Tweet celebrating his 15 years of sobriety. 

Calvin Harris

The Scottish DJ can be found at all of the craziest raves... completely sober. He told BBC that, "I stopped drinking because it was actually making me ill. It was affecting my brain in the worst way." He chose his career and health over partying, which is unheard of in the party rave scene.

Eva Mendes

Eva Mendes famously entered rehab in 2008. She struggled with substance and alcohol abuse and needed the extra help to get clean and sober. She was in rehab for a year and was on the cover of Interview magazine, highlighting her year of growth.

Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe is famous for his stint as Harry Potter in the series of the same name. Working as a child actor is difficult, and we've seen many child actors fall from grace. Radcliffe worked hard to keep himself afloat. "I barely think about alcohol," he once said in an interview.

Ben Afleck

Ben Afleck has famously dealt with alcohol abuse issues. He's had a lot of ups and downs, but in 2018 he wrote a Facebook post admitting that he was in treatment once again. He even hired a sober coach and brings that coach to events where alcohol is a temptation. 

Macklemore

Macklemore struggled with alcohol in his teenage years, when he was way too young to even deal with those issues. He was completely sober by the age of 25. "The thing that pulled me back was knowing that I wanted to be a musician and that if I wanted to do this I had to get sober."

Russell Brand

As a comedian, Russell Brand always made fun of himself for his issues with alcohol. It was probably easier to make those jokes since he's been sober for 17 years! He's also dedicated part of his life to helping others who might relate and even released a book called Recovery: Freedom from our Addictions. 

Blake Lively

Back in 2012, Blake Lively revealed that she simply isn't a fan of drinking. She's also never experimented with drugs, which many Hollywood actors of her stature probably can't relate to. "It's just something that I genuinely don't have a desire for."

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar was profiled for GQ's Rapper of the Year in 2013. In that interview, he revealed that he doesn't drink alcohol or do any drugs. Many fans found that hard to believe since a lot of his songs are about those two things, but it's just for storytelling purposes. He also said that he grew up in a household of substance abuse and would rather not go down that path.

Andy Murray

Andy Murray is a British tennis player. He credits his sober lifestyle to his passion for the sport. He gave up drinking alcohol when he was a teenager. "I always wanted to see how far I could go in the sport. I didn't want to do anything to jeopardize that."

Mike Posner

The "Cooler Than Me" singer announced that he was going sober back in 2015. The announcement was linked to a tell-all article where he explained why he made this choice. "I decided I couldn't let alcohol rob me of enjoying my life's special moments"

Common

The rapper turned actor has been adamant about keeping his sober life together. Naturally, being in the spotlight in both the rap world and the acting scene makes it tricky for him to stay sober, but he's been pretty successful in his journey! 

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt was interviewed back in 2018 for GQ Style as the cover story. He opened up about how alcohol drastically changed his life and he wanted to take charge. "I didn't want to live that way anymore," he said.

Logic

Logic never talked much about alcohol, even in his songs. "Drinking was something I was never really into, which is weird," he told VLAD TV in an interview. He has admitted to dealing with issues in relation to cigarettes and other drugs.

Pharrell Williams

Pharrell Williams told Paper Magazine in 2004 that alcohol wasn't for him. "Everybody else can do what they want, but that stuff isn't for me." Well said!

Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry hasn't kept his addiction issues a secret. He's had his ups and downs with his sobriety, but he does his best to keep himself clean. "The best thing about me is that if an alcoholic comes up to me and says, 'Will you help me stop drinking?' I will say, 'Yes. I know how to do that."

Sarah Silverman

Sarah Silverman is not a fan of drinking. "I don't think because it gives me a stomach ache," she told E!'s, Guiliana Rancic. "I try all the time, it looks good and I feel like I would have fun being drunk, but I have a Jewish stomach." To each their own!

Dane Cook

The off-beat comedian has been open with his anti-alcohol lifestyle. He's even said multiple times that he's never had even one sip of alcohol. Sometimes, he can go a little overboard, and once even went on a Facebook rant saying that people who drink should seek help. 

Eminem

Eminem has had a rough go of it, no doubt about it. His alcohol and substance abuse problems tanked his career and he went off the grid for years. He tried to come back with an album about his newfound sobriety but relapsed. Since then, he seems to be in a good, sober place.

Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler is a Scottish actor, so many people assume that he's a classic Scot who loves his alcohol. Well, at one point, that was true. He struggled a lot with his addiction to drugs and alcohol but ended up getting sober. 20 years later and he's still strong in his sobriety!

Kat Von D

Kat Von D belongs to a community where sex, drugs, and rock n' roll were the usual. She ended up completely flipping her life around and has been stone-cold sober for over 10 years. She's also taken up a vegan and anti-vaccination lifestyle... 

Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor (or Obi-Wan Kenobe to most) did some serious life searching in order to accept his sober lifestyle. One time, he drunkenly danced for Iggy Pop in a dressing room. That's when it all clicked. "I came to my senses when something in my brain went, 'What are you dong?'"

Kelly Preston wanted to quit alcohol and drugs so she could focus on herself more than her demons. She became a mother to two children and knew that things had to change. "Now, I don't drink anymore. I don't smoke anymore. I don't do drugs anymore. All of those come with an 'anymore.' I used to do everything and a lot of everything."

Jim Carrey

Even though it seems like Jim Carrey as a normal guy is just a figment of our imaginations, he did get quite serious about his battles with drugs and alcohol. "I rarely drink coffee. I'm very serious about no alcohol, no drugs. Life is too beautiful."

The famous comedian had a bizarre incident with alcohol that made her quit completely... It's definitely not like anyone else's story. She explained in an interview that she was eleven years old when she choked on beer and nearly passed out. The incident was so scarring that she never had alcohol again.

Jennifer Hudson never partook in the Hollywood party scene. In an interview with Chelsea Handler, she said, "I've never had a drink in my life. I've never been interested. Nobody ever believes it."

The Nurse Jackie star has been proudly sober for over 25 years. She's said that the support of her friends and family is what helped her the most.

The Magic Mike star once revealed that he basically went sober unintentionally. "I was homeless, carless, and broke with no career. So yes, it was worth it [to get sober.]" He struggled with sobriety but ended up seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Keith Urban admitted that he struggled with drugs and alcohol early in his career, specifically when he moved to Nashville. It wasn't easy to get sober, but he credits his wife, Nicole Kidman, for helping him through the way. Now, he maintains his sobriety.

The Community star broke the news of her sobriety on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and naturally, people didn't believe her. She said that she's never had a drink in her life and doesn't plan on it any time soon. 

Tobey Maguire

Even Spider-Man struggled with alcohol! He learned his lesson at the young age of 19. He told The Guardian, "I stopped consuming any mind-altering substances when I was 19 years old. I've been abstinent since then."

Kelly Osbourne

Being the daughter of Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne is not easy. Kelly herself struggled with the same substance abuse issues her parents and brother struggled with. Eventually, she got sober and has been successful with her sobriety for over 10 years.

Brandon Flowers

The lead singer of The Killers revealed that his addiction to alcohol during the band's early years helped him get sober. He didn't like how it made him feel, so he quit it. He's been sober for years.

Florence Welch

The lead singer of Florence and The Machine has been open about her path to sobriety. "I used to drink before every performance, I'm quite shy, really. That's probably why I used to drink a lot. But, I don't anymore. When I finally took time off to make this new record, I had time to strengthen."

Lily Allen

Lily Allen just recently marked 18 months of sober living. She posted a selfie to Instagram that said, "clean and serene for eighteen months." She's been open about her road to sobriety and how her husband's sobriety has helped her as well.

Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy spoke of his alcohol addiction in an interview on Good Morning Britain in 2018. "I was a bog-standard alcoholic my whole life," which started in his teens. He went to rehab in 2003 and has been sober since.
